Stars notch first SAC win of year

OCU defeats St. Gregory's 25-22, 25-21, 25-16

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University registered its first Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball victory of the year 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Alex Benbrook, a senior from Enid, Okla., topped the Stars with 12 kills, while Raissa Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, notched her 14th double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs for OCU (8-11, 1-2 SAC).
Danielle Robison, a sophomore from Dallas, rang up 37 assists and seven digs, while Victoria Cross, a senior from Oklahoma City, picked up 14 digs for OCU. Anna Gentry, a sophomore from Stillwater, Okla., contributed 10 digs, and Taylor Rowton, a senior from Edmond, Okla., knocked down seven kills.
OCU went up 18-14 in the first set as Santos hammered down two kills as the Stars scored three points in a row. The Stars erased a 20-18 deficit as Santos' kill, Benbrook's kill, then Benbrook and Aspen Healy's block helped OCU build a 22-20 edge. Rowton nailed a kill to clinch the set.
The Stars reeled off five points in a row to go up 16-11 in the second set. Rowton's kill broke an 11-11 tie, then Benbrook had two kills. Irwin's kill capped the OCU run. Benbrook socked the decisive kill in the second set.
OCU finished off the match with three consecutive points as Rowton's kill brought up match point.
The Stars take on Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Friday in Edmond, Okla.
