OCU takes two setbacks in MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational

Stars go to 6-9 on year

OLATHE, Kan. – Oklahoma City University fell to Northwestern (Iowa) in a topsy-turvy 25-16, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-9 verdict Friday at the Bell Family Arena in the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational.
OCU went to 6-9 on the year after dropping a 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22 contest to Hastings (Neb.) later Friday.
Four Stars hit double figures in kills against Northwestern. Taylor Rowton and Raissa Santos topped the Stars with 12 kills each, while Alex Benbrook and Meghan Irwin each had 11 kills. Danielle Robison recorded 42 assists, eight digs and two blocks.
Victoria Cross picked up 24 digs, and Anna Gentry contributed 14 digs and three aces for OCU. Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, chipped in 19 digs. Benbrook, a senior from Enid, Okla., and Torrie Flynn each added five blocks.
In the fifth set, Rylee Hulstein knocked down a kill to put Northwestern ahead 8-3. Down 12-4, OCU rallied with four consecutive points, including Gentry's ace. Rowton had a kill to keep OCU alive and cut its deficit to 14-9, but Kate Boersma answered with a kill to win the match.
Against Hastings, Irwin, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, led OCU with 18 kills. Rowton, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added 14 kills, five digs and five blocks, while Santos tacked on 10 kills, 21 digs and three blocks.
Robison rang up 47 assists and 10 digs, and Cross scooped up 18 digs.
The Stars take on host MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) at noon, then Baker (Kan.) at 4 p.m. Saturday in the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational.
