Stars rack up two wins in OCU-SNU Classic

OCU takes wins over Bethel, Southwestern Assemblies of God

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University swept its two volleyball matches Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Oklahoma City-Southern Nazarene Classic.
The Stars knocked off Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 25-16, 32-34, 25-16, 25-13 then defeated Bethel (Kan.) 13-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18. OCU improved to 3-1 on the year.
OCU posted its second highest single-match team block total ever with 15.5 blocks. The Stars combined for 17 blocks at Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Nov. 7, 2007. Alex Benbrook, a senior from Enid, Okla., topped OCU with 18 kills and seven blocks.
“That is a phenomenal number of blocks,” OCU coach Nikki Dieball said. “I'm proud of our effort. We turned our performance around from the previous night.”
Danielle Robison, a sophomore from Dallas, rang up 42 assists, 17 digs and three blocks, while Raissa Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, contributed 12 kills, 22 digs and three blocks for the Stars. Taylor Rowton contributed nine kills and two blocks, while Meghan Irwin chipped in seven kills, 21 digs and six blocks.
Irwin knocked down two kills, and Torrie Flynn added another as the Stars scored the final three points of the first set. In the second set, OCU rebounded from a 7-1 deficit to get to set point twice at 24-23 and 28-27.
Benbrook clinched the win with a kill in the third set.
Against Bethel, OCU dug out of an 18-12 deficit in the second set to win the frame. Victoria Cross stuck an ace to tie the set 19-19. Irwin's kill brought up set point at 24-23, then Robison dumped off a kill to win the set.
Irwin, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, led OCU with 15 kills and three blocks against Bethel. Benbrook recorded 10 kills and three blocks, while Robison put together 41 assists and 13 digs. Cross, a senior from Oklahoma City, racked up a career-high 28 digs.
The Stars take on Northwood (Fla.) at 8 a.m. Central time Sept. 2 in the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament at Daytona Beach, Fla.
