Stars end regular season as SAC co-champions

OCU shuts down Rogers State 7-0, 8-0 to close out the year

A.J. Woodward nabbed her 16th win of the season with her complete game shutout Tuesday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City University softball team claimed a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title with a two-game blanking of Rogers State Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked 11th in the NAIA, picked up their 23rd 40-win season in the past 24 years under the direction of coach Phil McSpadden. Despite earning the conference co-championship, OCU will have the second seed in the SAC tournament. Postseason play begins Friday at 11 a.m. Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
OCU allowed just six hits and no runs in the doubleheader with Rogers State, taking the games 7-0 and 8-0. Lily LaVelle started the night from the circle with a complete-game two-hitter. LaVelle, a junior from Bridge Creek, Okla., fanned 13 batters to pick up her 23rd win of the season.
A.J. Woodward, a junior from Menifee, Calif., tossed the run-rule shortened nightcap for the Stars. Woodward needed a scant 67 pitches to finish off the Hillcats in five innings while giving up four hits in the shutout.
The Stars struck first blood on the night with a three-run first inning that forced a Rogers State pitching change. OCU added three more in the second when Brittany Caruthers popped a bases-clearing single to right center. The Stars earned their final run of the opening game in the fourth. Nathalie Timmermans grounded out to second, but brought in LaVelle from third on the play to give OCU the 7-0 win.
In similar fashion, the second game of the evening started with OCU jumping on the board early and often. LeeAnn Lopez belted a single though the left side to bring in Tori Joyner in the first. The Stars efforted two more across the plate in the second. LaVelle smacked a double down the left field line to bring in Kylee Rounsaville. Joyner followed it up with a sacrifice fly to allow Shari Misuraca to cross the plate.
The Stars broke it open in the third as they added four runs to set the lead at 7-0. Kelsey Link cleared the bases with a two RBI single a LaVelle single added another run to the OCU tally when Chelsey Eddy sprinted around from second base. A misplayed ball by Hillcats second baseman Logan Zamora put Timmermans aboard and allowed LaVelle to round into home.
In the fourth, Eddy came to the plate with runners on the corners. Her grounder to second allowed Magean De Le Torre to make her way to home plate. Rogers State could not extend the game past the fifth. The Hillcats managed two of their six total hits on the night in the inning, but Woodward struck Ashlie Fauchier out looking on a full count to close the game and clinch the share of the conference title.
