CONWAY, Ark. – Oklahoma City University knocked off Williams Baptist (Ark.) 10-7 in eight innings and fell 3-1 to Central Baptist (Ark.) on Friday in the Central Baptist Invitational.
The Stars, ranked 10th in NAIA softball, went to 8-2 on the year.
Brittany Caruthers, a sophomore from Waxahachie, Texas, drove in the winning runs against Williams Baptist. Caruthers pounded a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.
Caruthers nailed two homers and drove in five runs as she smacked a two-run blast in the first. She went 2-for-5. Chelsea Eddy, a redshirt freshman from Rockwall, Texas, was 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lily LaVelle, a junior from Bridge Creek, Okla., finished the game by notching a strikeout with two runners on for her second save of the year. A.J. Woodward, a junior from Menifee, Calif., picked up the win to move to 4-0.
Against Central Baptist, LaVelle fanned a career-high 16 while allowing four hits in seven innings.
Jessica Bock held the Stars to two hits in seven innings. LaVelle scored OCU's only run after doubling, then advancing to third base on a wild pitch. LaVelle took advantage of a passed ball to reach home. Magean De La Torre accounted for OCU's other hit on a bunt single.
The Stars face Lindenwood (Mo.) at noon, then Lyon (Ark.) at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Central Baptist Invitational.
