Stars overwhelm Wayland Baptist 45-6

OCU registers three falls, two forfeits

Cameron Ream is ranked ninth among NAIA 149-pounders.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University dismantled Wayland Baptist (Texas) 45-6 on Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling, upped their dual record to 3-2. OCU turned in five bonus-point wins, including three falls.
“We were a little flat after our win over Missouri Baptist,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “They let Wayland in too many times, but we kept the pressure on. We came back in a couple of matches. Our style of wrestling is continuous pressure.”
Cameron Ream turned the tables on Chris Hart for a fall in 4:53. At 149 pounds, Ream erased a 4-1 deficit. Ream drove Hart's back into the mat out of a sitting position.
“Cameron is a junker,” Randall said. “He catches you in awkward positions. He's a pinner.”
Cody Sivertsen notched the fall at 197 in 5:29. In a 2-2 match, Sivertsen rotated Manuel Rocha to his back and worked for the pin.
Michael Brown finished the dual with a fall at 285 pounds over Markese Christian.
“Mike Brown has improved 1,000 percent since the first open tournament in November,” Randall said. “He's unbelievable.”
Eric Waggoner gutted out a 4-3 victory over Victor Thomas at 141 pounds. Thomas took a 3-2 edge with a last-minute escape, but Waggoner answered with the takedown at seven seconds remaining to win.
“Freshmen are inconsistent, but Eric Waggoner always wrestles,” Randall said. “He continuously wrestled and took him down.”
Kidd Gomez posted a 17-2 technical-fall win over Albert Tapia. Gomez led 12-2 after one period using three takedowns and two near falls. Gomez, a junior from Noble, Okla., finished the match with a reversal and near fall, the latter of which happened with 1:28 left in the second period. Gomez, ranked third at 125, notched his third technical fall this season.
At 174, Derek Peperas won 11-7 over Jose Alvarez. Peperas, a senior from Albuquerque, N.M., broke down Alvarez in the final minute. Peperas, ranked fourth at 174, posted a three-point near fall and takedown out of the move.
OCU wrestles in the Newman Jet Invitational at 9 a.m. Dec. 11 in Wichita, Kan.
