OCU at USAO men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University hits the road to take on USAO in a Sooner Athletic Conference contest.

ABOUT THE STARS: The 4-1 Stars enter the game coming off an 83-73 road win over Mid-America Christian on Nov. 22 at the Gaulke Activity Center. OCU led by as many as 24 en route to picking up its first SAC win of the season.
Sophomore Tim Morton led the Stars with a game-high 18 points against Mid-America Christian. Morton also pulled down five rebounds. The 6-9 forward out of Capital Heights, Md., averages 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game for OCU this season.
Leading scorer C.J. Busby added 12 points and five rebounds. The sharp-shooting junior averages 13.6 points per game while shooting 45 percent from 3-point land. The forward out of Beaumont, Texas, is currently fourth in NAIA Division I in 3-point field goals made per game with 4.0.
Guard Troynell Adams added a season-high 16 points and five rebounds off the bench and point guard Charlton Jones passed out 10 assists to go along with seven points and five rebounds against Mid-America Christian. Jones is currently sixth in NAIA Division I in assists per game with 7.0.
The Stars are currently ranked sixth in NAIA Division I in field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 35 percent, and seventh in defensive rebounds per game with 31.
 
ABOUT THE DROVERS: The 4-2 Drovers enter their first SAC contest coming off a 99-82 road win over NCAA Division II Cameron in Lawton, Okla., on Nov. 26.
Forward Kyle Hunt led USAO with 19 points and 12 rebounds against Cameron. The 6-8 senior leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 12.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Guard Phillip Harris added 16 points against Cameron. Harris scored double figures in his last three outings with 12 points against Langston and Southeastern Oklahoma State respectively.
Junior Brandon Cutler posted 13 points against Cameron. The 6-6 forward is second on the team in scoring and dropped a season-high 20 points against LSU Shreveport (La.) on Nov. 5.
The Drovers and Stars split last season with the each team winning at home. USAO clipped OCU 63-62 on Jan. 11, and OCU returned the favor winning 82-67 on Feb. 24.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps enters his first season as a head coach with OCU. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach at Oklahoma. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 22-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldogs Athletic Hall of Fame.
Brisco McPherson enters 2011-12 with an overall record of 284-306 in 21 seasons at USAO. McPherson led the Drovers to the NAIA title in 2002.
