Lubbock Christian slips past OCU twice

Lily LaVelle went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in the second game Monday.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Lubbock Christian (Texas) prevailed 4-3, 6-5 over Oklahoma City University on Monday at PlainsCapital Park in a clash of top 10-ranked teams in NAIA softball.

The ninth-ranked Stars fell to 32-10, 27-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian went to 48-4, 27-3. Lubbock Christian took the lead in the SAC standings.

In the first game, Kayla Van Dieran had a two-run double in the fourth inning to make the difference for Lubbock Christian.

In the sixth, Nathalie Timmermans hammered a three-run home run to center field to cut into OCU's deficit. Autumn Mayberry singled, then Lily LaVelle drew a walk ahead of Timmermans' homer. The Stars mustered only LeeAnn Lopez getting hit by pitch in the seventh.

Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Lopez went 1-for-2, and Mayberry was 1-for-3.

Jenni Gaby took the loss for OCU, moving to 5-3 on the year. Gaby threw all six innings.

In the second game, Amanda Myers drew a bases-loaded walk for the game's winning run in the eighth.

Lopez put OCU up 5-4 in the top of the seventh on a base hit to score Alicia Clifton from second base.

The Stars built a 4-1 lead in the sixth on Kelby Roberson's RBI double and LaVelle's run-scoring single to center.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lubbock Christian answered with Cori Enriquez's RBI single. Lubbock Christian loaded the bases, then got a hit by pitch and a walk to score twice more and take the lead.

Lubbock Christian forced extra innings with Amanda Parsons' two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

LaVelle went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Mayberry was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Lopez was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in.

LaVelle suffered the loss, moving to 16-3. She struck out four in 7.1 innings.

OCU faces Southern Nazarene in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
