OKLAHOMA CITY – Lily Lavelle ripped a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Oklahoma City University secure a 6-1 victory over Oklahoma Baptist in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Ann Lacy Stadium.
The Stars, ranked ninth in NAIA softball, defeated OBU 5-1 in the first game to extend their winning streak to 13 games. OCU moved to 27-7, 24-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with the sweep.
Lavelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., finished the second game 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored to lead the charge for OCU. Amanda Howard and Ashley Wilburn each had two hits as OCU pounded out nine hits in the game.
The Stars scored four times in the sixth inning, capped by Lavelle's three-run shot to left-center to grab control of a tight game. Wilburn connected for an RBI double to left field that gave OCU a 3-1 advantage earlier in the inning.
Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, won her ninth game of the season in the circle by shutting down the Lady Bison offense. Wilburn allowed a run on five hits and struck out four in seven innings of work.
In game one, OCU broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning to pull away. Nathalie Timmermans doubled down the left-field line to put OCU up 2-1. Wilburn followed with a bunt single that brought home a run, then Jen Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Stars a 4-1 advantage. Wilburn came home with the fourth run of the inning when Laurin Hess was caught in a run-down and picked off at first base.
Lavelle pitched all seven innings for the Stars to improve to 14-2 on the year. Lavelle surrendered one run on four hits while striking out seven batters.
The Stars hit the road for a doubleheader with Oklahoma Christian on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m.
