OCU shuts down USAO 8-0, 7-0

Nathalie Timmermans had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored in Saturday's doubleheader.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blanked USAO 8-0, 7-0 to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Stars, ranked 11th in NAIA softball, improved to 25-7, 22-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has won 11 consecutive games in conference play.

The Stars run-ruled USAO in the first game of the twin bill behind a strong pitching performance from Lily Lavelle. Lavelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., held the Lady Drovers to just four hits over six innings of work and struck out eight. Lavelle (13-2) has now tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings spanning the last three games.

Amanda Howard, a senior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, and Kelby Roberson, a freshman from Washington, Okla., led OCU at the plate with two hits apiece. Howard finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Roberson batted 2-for-3 with a run scored.

LeeAnn Lopez went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Lopez increased OCU's lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to left-center, her fifth of the season.

Lavelle, Ashley Wilburn and Jen Davis each added an RBI in the game.

The Stars picked up where they left off by shutting down the USAO offense in game two. Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, scattered three hits and struck out six batters in seven innings of work to move to 8-3 on the season.

OCU capitalized on four USAO errors in the second game to build a comfortable lead. The Stars scored twice in the first inning when Roberson reached base on a throwing error by the USAO shortstop and advanced to third base. Howard brought home Roberson with a sacrifice bunt to give the Stars a 2-0 lead.

Wilburn padded the OCU lead to 4-0 with a two-RBI double to right field in the fifth inning. Nathalie Timmermans drove in two with a single to right field in the sixth to give the Stars a 7-0 advantage.

OCU host Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Ann Lacy Stadium.
