CLAREMORE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University topped Rogers State 8-0, 5-1 to sweep a doubleheader on Thursday at the Hillcat Complex.
The Stars, ranked 17th in NAIA softball, racked up 29 hits in the two games, and improved to 19-7, 16-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU used a seven-run fourth inning to run-rule Rogers State in game one. The Stars pounded out 17 hits in the game and had seven players record at least two hits.
Ashley Wilburn led OCU with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Autumn Mayberry recorded two hits and two RBIs.
Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, went the distance in the circle to improve to 6-3 on the season. Wilburn allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters in six innings.
Jen Davis put OCU on the board with a solo homer to center with one out in the fourth. With two outs, the Stars had eight consecutive batters reach base.
Mayberry singled up the middle to score two runs and advanced to third base on a fielding error by the RSU centerfielder. Amanda Howard reached base on an error by the shortstop to bring home Mayberry and give OCU a 4-0 advantage.
Nathalie Timmermans followed with a single to center, then Wilburn brought home two runs with a single through the left side.
Laurin Hess capped the inning with an RBI single to left-field to give OCU a 7-0 lead.
Wilburn added a solo shot to center in the sixth inning.
In game two, Lily LaVelle shut down Rogers State in the circle with 11 strikeouts. LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., gave up just three hits and didn't allow an earned run over seven innings to move to 10-2 on the season.
Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Stars in game two. Timmermans ripped an RBI single to left-field in the fourth inning that put OCU up 4-0.
OCU will travel to Southern Nazarene on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
