JOPLIN, Mo. – Oklahoma City University went 1-2 on the first day of the Terri Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, knocked off Missouri Southern 4-1 before falling to Emporia State (Kan.) 3-1 and Nebraska-Omaha 10-1.
Against Missouri Southern, OCU plated three runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Autumn Mayberry drove in a run with a base hit to left, then Nathalie Timmermans hammered a two-run home run to right-center field. Melanie Mobley brought in a run in the second on a groundout.
Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lily LaVelle was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Laurin Hess went 1-for-2 and scored a run.
Ashley Wilburn (2-2) kept Missouri Southern to one run on three hits. Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, struck out six in a complete-game effort.
Against Emporia State, LaVelle socked a homer to right-center to account for OCU's only run. LaVelle went 2-for-3, while Jen Davis was 2-for-2.
LaVelle allowed three runs on five hits in five innings.
Nebraska-Omaha scored seven runs in the final two innings off OCU. Beth Haley scattered seven hits, allowing only one run.
Davis, a senior from Muscatine, Iowa, went 2-for-3, and Wilburn was 1-for-2. LaVelle drove in OCU's only run.
The Stars face Missouri Western at 9 a.m. and Northwest Missouri at 3 p.m. Sunday to finish off the tournament.
