OCU splits twin bill with Lubbock Christian

Amanda Howard hit her third home run of the year Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University scored its season high in the second game as Lubbock Christian (Texas) won the first one 6-5, then the Stars rolled to a 14-0 romp Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Stars, ranked 16th in NAIA softball, pounded 16 hits in the second game in moving to 15-7, 12-2. Third-ranked Lubbock Christian went to 32-4, 13-3.

In the second game, OCU erupted for nine runs in the first inning. Amanda Howard cranked an opposite-field, two-run home run to right field to score the Stars' first runs. Nathalie Timmermans reached home on a Lubbock Christian error.

LeeAnn Lopez knocked in two runs on a bases-loaded single. Kelby Roberson added an RBI base hit, then Lily LaVelle brought in two more runs on a single. Timmermans made the score 9-0 on a base hit to center field.

The Stars put together five more runs in the second. Ashley Wilburn scored on an error to make it 10-0. LaVelle pounded a fly ball that stayed fair along the right-field foul line for a three-run blast. Shari Misuraca drove in another run on a single up the middle.

LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., shut out Lubbock Christian on two hits and three walks. LaVelle (8-3) fanned six.

Howard, a senior from Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while LaVelle went 3-for-3, scored three times and drove in five runs. Timmermans was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, and Laurin Hess was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jen Davis went 2-for-2 and scored twice.

In the first game, Timmermans spotted OCU a 2-0 first-inning lead by crushing a full-count pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run shot.

Lubbock Christian rallied for four runs in the third highlighted by Amanda Parsons' two-run double. OCU answered to tie the game 4-4 in the sixth as Autumn Mayberry had an RBI double, then scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the seventh, Parsons had an RBI double, then Jennifer Frazier was hit by pitch with the bases full. Davis led off the bottom of the inning by smashing a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall.

Roberson had a base hit, but LaVelle flew out to first, then Mayberry grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Davis, a senior from Muscatine, Iowa, went 2-for-3, while LaVelle was 1-for-3 and scored twice. Timmermans had two RBIs. Jenni Gaby took the loss to move to 2-1.

OCU faces Mid-America Christian in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
