CHICKASHA, Okla. – Ashley Wilburn tossed a no-hitter as Oklahoma City University blasted USAO 9-0 in the first game of the doubleheader on Tuesday at Bill Smith Ballpark.
The Stars, ranked No. 16 in NAIA softball, defeated USAO 6-2 in game two to sweep the doubleheader. OCU moves to 14-6, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, was dominant in the circle in game one. Wilburn didn't allow a hit and struck out 10 batters in five innings of work.
The Stars pounded out 11 hits, including three home runs to back Wilburn.
OCU got things going in the third inning with six runs to take a 7-0 lead. Nathalie Timmermans doubled home a run with two outs to give the Stars a 2-0 advantage.
Wilburn followed with a single up the middle to score Timmermans, then Laurin Hess reached on a fielding error by the centerfielder to bring home Wilburn and give OCU a 4-0 lead. Two batters later, LeeAnn Lopez hit a three-run shot to left-field to put the Stars up 7-0. Lopez led the way for OCU in the first game with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Autumn Mayberry went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored, while Timmermans went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
OCU ripped off the first six runs in game two to pick up the sweep. The Stars put the game out of reach with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead. All three runs scored on a throwing error by the USAO catcher that went to the left-field corner.
Amanda Howard, Wilburn and Timmermans each recorded an RBI in game two.
Jenni Gaby, a junior from Quitman, Texas, pitched seven innings to earn her second victory of the season. Gaby allowed two unearned runs on three hits and struck out four batters to improve to 2-0.
The Stars will travel to Henderson State (Ark.) on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
