THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to keep rolling as the Stars travel to face Sooner Athletic Conference-leading cross-town rival Southern Nazarene.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU nipped Rogers State 73-72 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (11-6, 9-5 SAC) overcame an 18-point deficit as Chris Brown hit free throws with 1:16 left for the final margin.
Brown, a 6-foot senior from Spencer, Okla., sparked OCU with 18 points and four steals. Brown leads the Stars with 17.5 points a game while also nabbing 1.29 steals a contest.
Corey Bingham, a 6-3 junior from Lynn, Mass., recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists, hitting 6 of 8 shots from the field. Bingham averages 13.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.29 steals per game. Jerome Phillips, a 6-5 senior from Chickasha, Okla., chipped in 15 points and six rebounds. Phillips averages 10.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists a game.
OCU's 5.18 blocked shots a game as a team rank sixth in NAIA Division I. Bryant Williams, a 6-9 junior from Austin, Texas, from is sixth nationally with 2.47 blocks per game.
In the preseason, the Stars have been picked to finish sixth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times.
OCU holds a 36-17 advantage all-time against Southern Nazarene. Southern Nazarene won 73-51 over the Stars on Jan. 31 at the Sawyer Center.
ABOUT THE CRIMSON STORM: Southern Nazarene knocked off Oklahoma Christian 64-54 on Saturday in Bethany, Okla. Southern Nazarene led by only six points with 33 seconds remaining, but held on to improve to 19-4, 14-1.
Xavier Alexander, a 6-6 junior, spearheaded Southern Nazarene with 18 points, four assists and three steals. Alexander tops his team with 18.1 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. Vladimir Bulut, a 6-7 senior, came off the bench to score 11 points. Bulut records 6.6 points a game. A.J. Thomas, a 6-foot junior, adds 14.0 points and 4.0 assists a game.
Southern Nazarene is ranked sixth in NAIA Division I. SAC coaches predicted Southern Nazarene would finish fourth in the conference in the preseason.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Adam Bohac has guided Southern Nazarene to a 39-16 record in his second season as head coach. Bohac was an assistant at SNU from 2004-07 and assistant at Army in 2007-08.
