PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) edged Oklahoma City University 73-69 on Thursday at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars, ranked 14th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, held a 57-48 advantage with 9:16 remaining in the second half before Wayland rallied for the win. OCU shot 55.8 percent in the game and outscored Wayland 36-12 in the paint. OCU dropped to 16-8, 14-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with the loss.
Kavon Lytch, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., recorded 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead OCU. Lytch made nine of his 14 attempts from the field.
Jeremy McCarty, a junior from Houston, notched 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Bryant Williams, a junior from Austin, Texas, was the only other OCU player in double figures with 14 points.
Wayland erased the nine-point OCU lead with a 14-5 run stretching 5:06. Jason Griffin hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 62 with 4:10 remaining in the game. Wayland continued the run with another 3 from Griffin and a layup from Taylor Janowicz to make the score 67-62 with 2:09 remaining.
Chris Brown hit a 3-pointer for OCU to cut the lead to 67-65 with 1:31 remaining, but Wayland went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch. For the night, Wayland made 16 of 21 shots from the charity stripe, while OCU got to the line only seven times.
OCU shot 64.3 percent from the field and never trailed in the first half. The Stars built a comfortable 20-11 lead on a layup from Jerome Phillips with 13:15 to play in the half.
After Wayland cut the lead 31-29, OCU went on a 9-2 run to take a 40-33 lead. Brown capped the run with a 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining. OCU led 40-35 at the break.
The Stars will conclude the regular season at Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
