THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University seeks a road Sooner Athletic Conference win against USAO.
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU knocked off Oklahoma Christian 65-46 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena in the Backyard Brawl. The Stars (13-7, 11-6 SAC) seized sole possession of third place within the conference by reeling off a 13-0 run early in the second period.
Chris Brown, a 6-foot senior from Spencer, Okla., topped OCU in scoring with 15 points while pocketing two steals. Brown leads the Stars in scoring (17.6 points a game) and steals (1.30 a contest).
Corey Bingham, a 6-3 junior from Lynn, Mass., logged 13 points and five rebounds, sinking four 3-pointers. Bingham averages 13.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.25 steals per game. Jerome Phillips, a 6-5 senior from Chickasha, Okla., chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Phillips records 10.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game.
OCU's 4.85 blocked shots a game as a team rank eighth in NAIA Division I. Bryant Williams, a 6-9 junior from Austin, Texas, from is sixth nationally with 2.20 blocks per game.
In the preseason, the Stars have been picked to finish sixth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times.
OCU leads the all-time series against USAO 28-11. The Stars beat USAO 77-73 in overtime on Jan. 29, 2009 at Abe Lemons Arena.
ABOUT THE DROVERS: USAO's rally fell short in an 82-74 loss to Rogers State on Monday in Chickasha, Okla. USAO trailed by 20 points and cut its deficit to one point before dropping to 5-17, 3-14 in the SAC.
Thomas Peters, a 6-2 junior, propelled USAO with 30 points, hitting 10 of his 20 shots from the floor. Peters averages 14.0 points a game. Fred Savoie, a 6-5 sophomore, had 20 points and seven rebounds. Savoie leads USAO with 15.9 points a game while grabbing 6.1 rebounds a contest. USAO's team free-throw percentage of 72.7 ranks ninth in the NAIA.
SAC coaches expected USAO to finish 10th in the league in the preseason.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Brisco McPherson has a 267-276 record in his 19th season as USAO coach. McPherson, also the school's athletic director, led USAO to the 2002 NAIA championship.
