OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University posted a three-set win over Wayland Baptist (Texas) 26-24, 25-21, 25-14 on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Xiaoting Ma, a senior from Dalian, China, pounded out a team-high 19 kills and picked up 14 digs and two aces. The Stars improved to 19-10, 9-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball, while Wayland Baptist dropped to 17-8, 9-4 in the SAC.
Lubbock Christian (Texas), Wayland Baptist and OCU are fighting for seeding in the SAC Tournament on Nov. 12-13 in Shawnee, Okla.
“It's always a fight when we played Wayland,” OCU coach Jen Gomez said. “We were up for it today. Momentum shifted our way. When we settled down and spread the ball around, we got it going.”
Raissa Santos, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, totaled nine kills and 15 digs, while Danielle Robison, a freshman from Dallas, recorded 36 assists, seven digs and two blocks for OCU.
In the first set, Wayland Baptist reached set point first. Keliesha Carter nailed a kill to put Wayland ahead 24-23. Santos answered with a kill, then Ma knocked down kills to put away the first set for the Stars.
OCU overcame a 10-3 deficit to take the second set. The Stars notched four consecutive points as Benbrook's kill tied the set 17-17.
The Stars finished the second frame with the final five points. Santos tied the set 21-21 on a kill, and Ma added a kill. Victoria Cross launched an ace to bring up set point, then Santos' kill won the set for OCU.
OCU clinched the win on three consecutive kills. Ma, Santos and Taylor Rowton provided the Stars the finishing blows.
The Stars take on Lubbock Christian at noon Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
