HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Oklahoma City University finished in third place in the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational on Tuesday at Ravens Nest Golf Club.
Sam Houston State and Oklahoma Christian edged the defending NAIA men's golf champion Stars. Sam Houston won by four strokes over Oklahoma Christian. The Stars trailed Oklahoma Christian by two strokes.
Top-ranked OCU fired a 290-278-284–852 to finish ahead of eight NCAA Division I squads on the par-71, 6,974-yard course. James Marchesani and Sondre Ronold spearheaded the Stars by tying for sixth place at three strokes off the individual pace.
Axel Ochoa led second-ranked Oklahoma Christian and captured the tournament title with a 73-72-63–208.
Marchesani, a freshman from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, posted a 73-68-70–211, while Ronold, a sophomore from Stavanger, Norway, turned in a 74-67-70–211 for OCU.
Conditions for the day included 86-degree temperatures with winds reaching 9 mph.
The Stars finished their fall schedule with two wins in three tournaments.
OCU will aim for its 19th conference crown in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships on April 26-27 at Cherokee Hills Golf Course in Catoosa, Okla. OCU will also vie for its eighth national title in the NAIA Championships on May 24-27 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
