OCU pounds Wayland Baptist 72-53

Corey Bingham knocked in 6 of 11 from beyond the 3-point line Monday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rode hot outside shooting to beat Wayland Baptist (Texas) 72-53 in men's basketball on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars nailed 10 3-pointers, and Corey Bingham sank six treys as OCU improved to 5-3, 3-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Wayland Baptist dropped to 4-7, 0-6.

Bingham, a junior from Lynn, Mass., led four OCU double-digit scorers with 19 points while collecting five rebounds and four assists. Chris Brown, a senior from Spencer, Okla., added 18 points.

Kavon Lytch, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., amassed 16 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Stars. Bryant Williams, a junior from Austin, Texas, chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

“We had good balance in our scoring,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We didn't want to watch someone do all the scoring. If you hit 3s, it spreads the defense out. We defended home court.

Corey Bingham can be a streaky shooter. It had been a while since he had that kind of game.”

OCU edged Wayland Baptist in rebounding 33-31 and outscored Wayland 32-20 in the lane.

“We had to box out,” Morrissey said. “You have to be active against their size. We did a better job getting to those rebounds than they did. The guys played good defense, particularly in the first half.”

Wayland Baptist managed 35.4 percent shooting from the field, 32 percent in the second half. OCU knocked in 50.9 percent from the floor, 52.2 percent in the second period.

OCU led wire to wire. The Stars built a 16-3 lead early as Wayland Baptist started 1-for-9 from the field. Lytch had back-to-back baskets to give OCU its 16-3 advantage.

Bingham and Brown canned consecutive treys to finish off a 10-2 run and forge the Stars' largest lead of the game. Brown's 3 put OCU ahead 65-42 with 8:01 left in the contest.

OCU meets Rogers State at 8 p.m. Thursday in Claremore, Okla.
