OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University netted its first Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball win of the year 25-8, 25-11, 25-10 over St. Gregory's on Tuesday.
Victoria Cross, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, struck for seven aces, one shy of the single-match school record for OCU. The Stars (7-14, 1-2) snapped a six-match losing string.
Alex Benbrook, a sophomore from Enid, Okla., led the team with 12 kills. Both Benbrook and Samantha Ball contributed three blocks in the match. Ball, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., handed out 29 assists and picked up eight digs, and Jeannee Campbell chipped in seven kills.
In the first set, the Stars scored five points in a row to build a 19-5 advantage. Ball and Benbrook combined for back-to-back blocks during that run. Oklahoma City hit .348 in the set.
The second set saw a tie game at six points, the only such tie in the match. OCU answered with six points in a row as Benbrook had a kill, forcing St. Gregory's to take a timeout. After returning from the timeout, OCU never looked back and allowed just five more points before heading to the last set.
Cross recorded a string of five aces in the third set as OCU scored nine points in a row. In the third set, Cross' five aces in this set was accompanied by aces by Elizabeth Hendrix and Shelbey Veselka to give the Stars a total of seven in the third set alone. OCU kept their momentum going through the third, hitting .324.
