OCU goes to 0-2 in SAC volleyball play

Xiaoting Ma had 16 kills and 14 digs Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University went to 0-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball play after falling 25-9, 25-19, 17-25, 25-12 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.

Xiaoting Ma, a junior hitter from Dalian, China, topped the Stars (6-14, 0-2) with 16 kills to go with 14 digs. Wayland Baptist improved to 12-1, 1-1.

Samantha Ball, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., dished out a season-high 32 assists while recording 14 digs for OCU. Shelbey Veselka, a junior from Boerne, Texas, picked up 25 digs.

Adrienne Tillery chipped in nine kills, and Victoria Cross totaled 14 digs for the Stars. Vicky Murphy notched five kills and 10 digs.

In the third set, OCU put together seven unanswered points to go up 16-9. Ma nailed down three kills during that stretch. Ma and Tillery had kills to cap OCU's run.

After Kimberli Harger had a kill that cut Wayland's deficit to 23-17, the Stars responded with two Ma kills to put away the third set.

Wayland Baptist went on an 11-0 run to begin the fourth and final set.

OCU takes on St. Gregory's at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
