OCU falls twice in Lawton

Shelbey Veselka racked up 30 digs Saturday.

LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron edged Oklahoma City University 27-29, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9, then Arkansas-Fort Smith knocked off the Stars 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 on Saturday at the Aggie Gym.

OCU lost its third consecutive match to fall to 6-11 on the year.

Against Cameron, Xiaoting Ma totaled 17 kills and 14 digs, and Alex Benbrook added 11 kills and three blocks for the Stars. Vicky Murphy picked up 25 assists and 11 digs, and Samantha Ball dished out 22 assists. Shelbey Veselka topped OCU with 20 digs.

OCU broke a 27-27 first-set tie as Ma and Benbrook nailed down consecutive kills. In the third set, down 23-21, OCU rallied with Adrienne Tillery serving. The Stars put away the third set using a block by Tillery and Jeannee Campbell, then Benbrook's kill.

After Cameron forced a fifth set, in the fifth, Cameron built a 10-1 lead on three kills in a row by Adrienne Lawson. OCU drew to within 12-7 on Ball's ace, but Cameron nipped OCU for the win.

Against Arkansas-Fort Smith, Ma notched nine kills and five digs. Ball had 12 assists, and Murphy added nine assists. Benbrook recorded five kills and two blocks, while Lindsay Hansen contributed five kills.

When Arkansas-Fort Smith got to set point at 24-17 in the second set, OCU responded with five points in a row with Veselka serving. Hansen capped the run with back-to-back kills. Heidi Luks put away the set with a kill for Arkansas-Fort Smith.

OCU faces Arkansas-Fort Smith at 7 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
