LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University opened the 2009-10 men's golf season with a win in the Lubbock Christian Fall Invitational on Tuesday at LakeRidge Country Club.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA men's golf by Golf World, put together a 281-279-287-847. OCU's Clark Collier finished in a tie for third individually.
Collier, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., fired a 72-67-71–210 to end five shots off the pace. Collier ended with 18 birdies among the 54 holes. Andreas Andersson of Southern Nazarene won a playoff over Finley Ewing IV of Texas Tech to take the individual title.
OCU stood 10 strokes in front of 17th-ranked Southern Nazarene. Western Texas took third, and Odessa (Texas) was in fourth. Defending NAIA champion Oklahoma Christian finished fifth.
Taylor Artman shot 69-73-72–214 to tie for eighth place, while Julian Valenciana carded 72-72-71–215. Michael Palmer recorded a 77-67-73–217, and Ryan Clatworthy had a 68-76-74–218.
OCU's second team placed sixth with a 292-286-293–871. Jacob Sahmaunt shot a 70-72-71–213, good for a tie for sixth. Sahmaunt sank two eagles in the tournament.
Sondre Ronold put together a 72-71-72–215, and Ben Bench turned in a 72-72-74–218. Jim Akerstrom finished with a 78-71-76–225, and Rayshon Payton shot 86-82-92–260.
Temperatures reached 81 degrees on the par-72, 6,739-yard course. The golfers faced hardly any wind, which was variable at 5 mph.
The Stars compete next in the Kansas Invitational on Sept. 28-29 in Lawrence, Kan.
