OCU holds first-day edge in Lubbock Christian Invitational

Taylor Artman stood five strokes off the pace Tuesday.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University led the Lubbock Christian Fall Invitational through 36 holes Monday at LakeRidge Country Club.

The Stars, ranked third in NAIA men's golf by Golf World, fired a 281-279–560 to lead by four strokes. Clark Collier paced OCU as he sat in a tie for third place individually.

Top-ranked defending NAIA champion Oklahoma Christian trailed OCU by four shots. No. 17th-ranked  Southern Nazarene was in a tie for fourth place.

Collier, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., shot 72-67–139 to be two strokes off the pace. He sank a tournament-high 12 birdies out of the 36 holes played on the par-72, 6,739-yard course.

Taylor Artman tied for ninth with a 69-73–142 for OCU. Each of the other Stars carded a 144 – Julian Valenciana had a 72-72–144, Ryan Clatworthy put together a 68-76–144 and Michael Palmer recorded a 77-67–144.

OCU's second squad tallied a 292-286–578, good for sixth place. Jacob Sahmaunt stood in a tie for ninth with a 70-72–142. Sondre Ronold had a 72-71–143, and Ben Bench shot 72-72–144.

Jim Akerstrom fired a 78-71–149, and Rayshon Payton had an 86-82–168 for the Stars.

Temperatures reached a high of 79 degrees. Clouds were overhead in the morning, but the skies cleared in the afternoon.

The tournament concludes Tuesday with another 18 holes starting with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
