OCU adds two wins in Baker Invitational

Jeannee Campbell had 19 kills combined in the Stars' two matches Saturday.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Oklahoma City University knocked off William Jewell (Mo.) 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 on Saturday in the Baker Invitational at the Collins Center.

The Stars also defeated Avila (Mo.) 25-15, 25-19, 25-13 to move to 6-8 on the year.

Against William Jewell, Xiaoting Ma had a team-high 18 kills to go with 17 digs to pace OCU. Victoria Cross and Elizabeth Hendrix recorded 17 digs each, and Vicky Murphy tallied 49 assists. Adrienne Tillery added 10 kills, five digs, three blocks and two aces, while Taylor Rowton had 10 kills and three blocks.

The Stars responded after hitting .029 in the first set. OCU hit .323 or higher in each set to finish with a .265 hitting percentage overall in the match. OCU tied its single-match season high with 75 digs.

Against Avila, Ma topped OCU with 16 kills to go with 12 digs and two aces. Jeannee Campbell chipped in 10 kills, while Murphy recorded 40 assists and 16 digs. Tillery, a junior from Carthage, Texas, contributed eight kills, six digs and three blocks.

After three lead changes in the second set, the Stars took command with three kills. Alex Benbrook, Campbell and Rowton nailed down kills to put OCU ahead 17-14.

The Stars take on Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Edmond, Okla.
