OCU vs. John Brown men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to avenge a road loss earlier this season against Sooner Athletic Conference foe John Brown (Ark.).

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. OCU students and faculty are admitted free into all Stars events with their ID.

 

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, the two-time defending NAIA Division I men's basketball champion, improved to 15-11, 8-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 72-62 victory over Mid-America Christian on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena. Jamel White led the Stars with 20 points and five rebounds.

White, a 6-foot-4 junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., paces the Stars, averaging 15.7 points, 5.1 boards, 2.5 assists and 1.31 steals per game.

Richard Jackson, a 6-foot senior from Bronx, N.Y., added 18 points and five assists. Jackson averages 13.6 points and 2.8 assists per game for the Stars. Vinicious Telo, a 6-8 sophomore from Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, contributed 11 points Monday, rounding out the Stars double-digit scorers.

DaVell Jackson, a 6-1 junior from Las Vegas, chips in 9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.65 steals a game. Jackson ranks 29th in the NAIA in assists, helping OCU rank 22nd in assist-to-turnover ratio at 0.96 assists per turnover in NAIA Division I.

The Stars have won or shared the conference championship the past three seasons.

OCU leads the series against John Brown 22-7. The Stars fell to John Brown 71-70 on Jan. 17 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Davaughn Jackson hit free throws with four seconds left to help John Brown overcome a 22-point deficit.

 

ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: John Brown fell to Southern Nazarene 71-69 on Saturday at the Sawyer Center. Cody Page posted 19 points, going 5 for 9 from behind the arc for John Brown (18-8, 11-7 in the SAC).

Davaughn Jackson added 12 points for JBU. Jackson paces the Gold Eagles, averaging 15 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Page averages 11 points for JBU. Thomas Galliguez averages 11 points, while Jarrett McGriff averages 10.2 points and 5.3 boards per game.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey embarks on his first season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the past four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.

Clark Sheehy is entering his second year as John Brown coach. Sheehy, who played at John Brown, returned to John Brown after two seasons as coach at Fresno Pacific (Calif.). Sheehy's head-coaching record is 56-58.
