OCU vs. Mid-America Christian men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University faces Mid-America Christian in a Sooner Athletic Conference matchup.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. OCU students and faculty are admitted free into all Stars events with their ID.

 

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, the two-time defending NAIA Division I men's basketball champion, fell to Oklahoma Baptist 82-72 on Saturday at the Noble Complex in Shawnee, Okla. The Stars moved to 14-11, 7-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Jamel White, a 6-foot-4 junior from Brooklyn, N.Y. led the Stars with a team-high 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. White paces the Stars, averaging 15.4 points, five boards and 2.5 assists per game.

DaVell Jackson, 6-1 junior from Las Vegas, and Richard Jackson, a 6-0 senior from Bronx, N.Y., both added 14 points in the matchup. Richard Jackson averages 13.2 points per game.

Vinicius Telo, a 6-8 sophomore from Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, contributed 13 points, while Ricardo Lovelace, a 6-4 junior from Philadelphia, chipped in 10 points, rounding out the Stars' double-digit scorers.

The three-time defending conference champion Stars were favored to win another league title in the preseason.

OCU has an 8-0 record against Mid-America Christian. The Stars defeated Mid-America 91-81 on Dec. 11 at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City.

 

ABOUT THE EVANGELS: Mid-America Christian improved to 3-21, 2-15 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, defeating St. Gregory's 68-62 on Saturday in Shawnee, Okla.

Tyron Goldsmith posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Charlie Shorter led the Evangels with 18 points while Derek Winston chipped in 13.
Goldsmith, a 6-5 senior, averages 12.1 points and 4.9 rebounds a game. Winston, a 6-1 senior, adds 6.3 points a game. 

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey embarks on his first season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the past four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.

Willie Holley is in his 35th season as a head coach. Holley, an NCCAA hall of famer, directed Mid-America Christian to NCCAA Division II championships in 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2007 in 20 appearances in the NCCAA national tournament. Holley picked up his 700th career win on Jan. 22 in Oklahoma City, defeating St. Gregory's 70-50.
