OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University won its fourth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball match 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 over John Brown (Ark.) on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Xiaoting Ma, a junior from Dalian China, picked up 12 kills, six digs and four blocks as the Stars moved to 10-14, 4-2. John Brown fell to 15-5, 3-3.
Samantha Ball, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., rang up 25 assists to go with 10 digs for OCU. Alex Benbrook added eight kills and five blocks, and Shelbey Veselka recorded 10 digs.
Adrienne Tillery turned back three John Brown attacks, and Jeannee Campbell chipped in two blocks as OCU piled up 10 team blocks.
Ma pounded down a kill to give OCU an early 5-1 first-set lead. John Brown rallied to take an 8-6 edge, but OCU scored the next six points. The Stars nailed down four kills as Lindsay Hansen put OCU ahead 12-8 en route to a first-set win.
OCU hit .371 in the second set, using two Ma kills and a Campbell kill to take an early 7-3 advantage on the way to the win.
In the third set, OCU erased a 10-8 deficit with a 5-0 tear. Ma and Tillery combined on back-to-back blocks to cap the run and put the Stars ahead 13-10.
The Stars finished off the three-set victory with eight consecutive points. Benbrook sparked the run with a solo block and added a kill and teamed with Campbell on a block during the match-ending run.
OCU faces Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m. Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
