GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Julian Valenciana of Oklahoma City University held the first-day lead, while Oklahoma City University stood in second place through two rounds of the Grand Canyon Invitational on Monday at Golf Club of Estrella.
Valenciana, a senior from Monterrey, Mexico, fired 67-72–139 to lead by three shots. OCU, ranked third in NAIA men's golf by Golf World, shot 288-289–577 to trail Western Washington by three strokes.
Clark Collier, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., shot 74-73–147 to be tied for 17th for the Stars. Michael Palmer chipped in a 70-78–148, while Ben Bench added a 77-72–149. Sondre Ronold had a 78-72–150.
Texas Wesleyan, ranked fourth in the NAIA, and eight-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) were also in the tournament.
The event features five NCAA Division II teams in the Golf World rankings – No. 11 CSU-San Bernardino, No. 16 Chico State (Calif.), No. 19 Grand Canyon (Ariz.) and tied for No. 23, Colorado-Colorado Springs and Northeastern State.
The last round of the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Oklahoma time Tuesday.
