OCU defeats St. Gregory's in three sets

Vicky Murphy nailed down a career-high nine kills to go with a block.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University notched a 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 win over Sooner Athletic Conference foe St. Gregory's on Friday at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse.

Vicky Murphy, a sophomore from Spring, Texas, picked up a career-high nine kills to lead OCU, now 16-18, 7-4 in the SAC.

Samantha Ball, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., added 28 assists and eight digs, while Shelbey Veselka, a junior from Boerne, Texas, recorded eight digs and six aces for OCU.

Alex Benbrook had seven kills and three blocks, and Elizabeth Hendrix picked up six digs.

OCU finished off the first set with the final six points. Jeannee Campbell and Taylor Rowton each had kills, and Veselka dropped in two aces during that stretch.

During the second set, OCU pulled away from a 5-5 tie with five points in a row. Murphy knocked down three kills, and Ball and Campbell added kills during that run.

In the third set, OCU reeled off seven consecutive points to take a 17-9 lead. Ball had a pair of kills, while Rowton and Adrienne Tillery chipped in kills during that 7-0 run.  

The Stars clinched the match by scoring the final five points of the set. Lindsay Hansen pounded down a kill, Murphy had two kills, then Benbrook got in a couple of blocks. Benbrook and Murphy teamed on a block to give OCU match point, then Benbrook and Rowton combined on a block to end the match.

The Stars take on John Brown (Ark.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
