Rogers State pulls away from OCU 78-67

Vinicius Telo had eight points, five rebounds and four assists Thursday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University was undone by a record-setting 3-point barrage by Rogers State in a 78-67 loss on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The Stars, ranked 21st in NAIA Division I men's basketball, dropped to 11-5, 4-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Third-ranked Rogers State (14-1, 8-1) nailed a single-game school-record 15 3-pointers.

OCU led 32-24 with 2:17 left in the first half after DaVell Jackson set up Richard Jackson and Jamel White on transition buckets back-to-back.

The Stars rolled out a new starting lineup as well as playing mostly zone defense.

"We have to dictate tempo," OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. "We did a really good job even though it was our first game playing mainly a zone. We didn't adjust well in the second half, and we missed free throws and layups, but I thought it went well. I was pleased with the effort overall."

Richard Jackson, a senior from Bronx, N.Y., led OCU with 25 points, while DaVell Jackson recorded 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. White added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

"We're down to different scorers," Morrissey said. "We have to build on this effort."

Rogers State pulled away using 57.1 percent shooting from the field in the second period. Deveric Taylor sank a trey, one of 11 second-half 3s, to erase OCU's 34-32 halftime lead. White cut OCU's deficit to 48-45 with 12:36 remaining. Rogers State answered by reeling off a 10-2 run and built a 19-point lead with 5:53 left.

OCU faces John Brown (Ark.) at 8 p.m. Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
