OCU manages 2-1 double-overtime NAIA Championships win

FRESNO, Calif. – Oklahoma City University survived a second consecutive double-overtime match, winning 2-1 over Hastings (Neb.) on Wednesday at Ramirez Field in the quarterfinals of the NAIA men's soccer championships.

Top-seeded OCU (20-2-1) advanced to face Bethel (Tenn.) at 7 p.m. Oklahoma time Friday at Ramirez Field in the semifinals. Hastings scored on its own goal to end the match at 108:16.

Stuart Hilton of the Stars pounded the ball twice into the teeth of the Hastings defense, which turned away Hilton's attempts both times. On the second time, Brandon Hull of OCU headed a piece of the ball, putting it into the air.

With OCU's Stephen Sheffield and Andy Taylor closing in on the ball and the ball falling inside the penalty box, Hastings' Mark Nave kicked the ball, looping it over his head and into the goal in trying to clear the ball out of bounds.

OCU had a 17-15 edge in shots and 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. The Stars mustered the only shot of overtime.

"We put them under so much pressure we had done enough to win in overtime," OCU coach Brian Harvey said. "The game did not deserve to go to penalty kicks."

Eighth-seeded and 15th-ranked Hastings finished its season 19-4-1. The fourth-ranked Stars posted their first 20-win season since going 23-2-1 in 2001. OCU has its first two overtime wins of the year.

"When you're down to the final 16, it's a difficult passage," Harvey said. "The boys showed a lot of character to win twice in double overtime. From top to bottom, we've done a tremendous job to this point."

Nave headed in the match's first goal for Hastings at 34:16 into the contest. Nave scored off a free kick from Yannic Thiel.

Hull knotted the score at one goal each at 67:27 into the match. Hull, a junior from Yukon, Okla., converted a header chance next to the far goalpost from Hilton's corner kick.

In overtime, Alex Gang sent a pass towards the goal before Damon Ellis arrived for a header chance in the 96th minute.

OCU had a couple of chances in the 54th minute. Scott Jackson got underneath a long kick from midfield. Jackson hit the ball, but Hastings goalkeeper Cody Poteat notched a save. John Dill tried another shot that sailed wide after Gang passed Dill the ball from the side of the goal.

Sheffield knocked a header shot off the post in the 57th minute. Hilton had another header try off a corner that sailed over the crossbar.

Sheffield nearly finished a pass from Gang in the 75th minute. Ellis sent a cross high over the goal in the 87th minute. Dill knocked a free kick high over the crossbar in the final minute of regulation.

OCU goalkeeper Andy Fitzpatrick finished with eight saves. Hastings' Brian Steinart had a one-on-one chance against Fitzpatrick in the 81st minute. Steinart fired a shot high that Fitzpatrick rejected. Chase McCoy tried a header that Fitzpatrick halted in the 84th minute.

Hastings had an opportunity in the 13th minute that ended with an offsides call. Hastings had a one-on-one chance against Fitzpatrick, but Josh Moran advanced beyond the Stars defense.

Joel Pedroza failed to capitalize for Hastings when he had Fitzpatrick out of the goal in the 18th minute. Pedroza's sliding shot attempt bounced off the post.
