FRESNO, Calif. – Oklahoma City University ended its season in the NAIA men's soccer championships semifinals, losing 4-0 to Bethel (Tenn.) on Friday at Ramirez Field.
OCU advanced the deepest it ever had in the NAIA men's soccer championships. In its previous national appearance, OCU went 1-1 in pool play in 1991. The top-seeded and fourth-ranked Stars finished 20-3-1 for OCU's third 20-win season in program history.
Bethel made the championship match against Rio Grande (Ohio) at 8 p.m. Oklahoma time Saturday at Ramirez Field.
"I thought we had an excellent season," OCU coach Brian Harvey said. "We got the 100 percentile from every player from top to bottom."
Unseeded and unranked Bethel ran its unbeaten string to 13 matches. Bethel went to 16-5-2.
Bethel had a 20-7 advantage in shots. Bethel became the second team to shut OCU out this year. The Stars had not been shut out since Sept. 5 against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.), spanning 20 matches.
"We have a very good team, but when we don't play for each other, we can be exposed like we were tonight," Harvey said. "We were capable of playing better. I don't know if the stage was too big, but our usually reliable players didn't play like they normally do."
The Stars notched the first shot of the match in the ninth minute. John Dill put a corner kick near the goal, then Chris Spendlove sent a header attempt over the goal. OCU mustered only one more shot in the first half on Stuart Hilton's straight-on kick that Bethel goalkeeper Massimo Collu-Marchese stopped. Bethel had a 9-2 shot advantage in the first period.
Bethel scored first on Mario Vila Boa's breakaway at 25:58 into the match. Armondo Orozco sent the ball to Vila Boa, who was closely guarded by Brandon Hull. Vila Boa got a step on Hull and knocked the ball into the goal next to the far post.
Eric Rosas put Bethel ahead 2-0 on a goal at the 35:48 mark. Felix Obilo drew the defense, then passed to Rosas, who found the far post with the ball. Rosas struck again for a 3-0 Bethel advantage off Orozco's assist at 42:58 into the contest.
Fredrik Ekvall scored Bethel's fourth goal from inside the penalty box. Bethel had a corner kick to set Ekvall up. Ekvall turned to poke the ball into the net.
Eight OCU seniors finished their careers, posting a four-year record of 59-19-6 with the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season title this year.
