OKLAHOMA CITY – Daniela Wallen from Oklahoma City University became two-time Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the year, becoming the seventh two-time honoree in league history.
The Stars' Daniela Galindo took SAC newcomer of the year, while NaShyla Hammons snared SAC freshman of the year. Wallen also picked up SAC defensive player of the year and OCU's Bo Overton snagged the John Hudson coach of the year.
Brooke Irwin of OCU collected honorable-mention all-SAC accolades. Wallen made the all-SAC first team, while Galindo reeled in second-team all-SAC acclaim. A Star picked up SAC player of the year for the sixth consecutive year and SAC newcomer of the year for the fifth year in a row.
Wallen tops NAIA Division I with 24.1 points a game and 675 points this season. Wallen, a senior from Caracas, Venezuela, ranks second with 3.79 steals a game and 106 steals on the season and ninth in field-goal percentage (55.5 percent) among the NAIA. Wallen has accumulated two NAIA player of the week awards and five SAC player of the week nods.
Wallen averages 9.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Wallen has scored 35 points twice, 30 points five times and 25 points 11 times this season. Wallen grabbed 15 rebounds vs. Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) on Nov. 19 and eight steals twice. Against ranked competition, Wallen produces 23.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in six games, all OCU wins. She has 14 double-doubles in 28 games this season and 28 in 56 career games for the Stars. Wallen has piled up 1,220 career points.
Galindo, a junior from Shattuck, Okla., supplies OCU with 17.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.18 steals a game. Her 91.3 percent free-throw percentage ranks No. 1 and her 46.5 percent 3-point shooting clip rates second among the NAIA. Her season highs include 26 points vs. Bacone on Jan. 28, five treys at Texas Wesleyan on Jan. 21, 10 rebounds at John Brown (Ark.) on Dec. 1 and six steals vs. College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Nov. 11.
Hammons posts 5.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.07 steals along with a 41.4 percent 3-point shooting percentage. Hammons, a freshman from Oklahoma City, had season bests with 16 points vs. USAO on Jan. 26, nine rebounds vs. Our Lady of the Lake and seven steals vs. Loyola (La.) on Nov. 25.
Irwin provides OCU with 10.0 points and 4.7 rebounds a game while hitting 61.7 percent from the field.
Overton has directed Oklahoma City (26-2, 17-1 SAC) to its 17th SAC regular-season championship, 19th consecutive 20-win season, 18th 25-win season in 19 years and the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament. In two years as OCU head coach, Overton owns a 46-11 record.
