OCU installed as SAC preseason favorite

Stars captured 17th league regular-season crown, 11th SAC Tournament title last season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Defending national champion Oklahoma City University is the clear choice among Sooner Athletic Conference coaches to win the 2017-18 league women's basketball crown.
The Stars finished last season with a 34-2 record under coach Bo Overton and had eight of the possible 11 first-place votes cast by league coaches.
John Brown (Ark.), a NAIA tournament qualifier last year, was picked second in the poll with 121 points and three first-place votes. Wayland Baptist (Texas) polled third with 114 points and one first-place vote.
The remaining poll is as follows: Mid-America Christian was fourth with 102 points, followed by Science and Arts of Oklahoma in fifth place with 83 points and Texas Wesleyan in sixth with 81 points. Southwestern Christian was picked seventh with 78 points, while Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) was eighth with 65 points. Oklahoma Panhandle State was ninth with 48 points.
The final teams in the poll were Bacone in 10th with 47 points, St. Gregory's in 11th with 39 points and Central Christian (Kan.) in 12th with 24 points. Central Christian and Panhandle State are newcomers to the conference in 2017-18.
OCU starts the season 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Langston. The Stars will take aim at their 18th SAC regular-season championship and 12th SAC Tournament crown.
The SAC season will conclude with its championship tournament featuring the top eight teams from the regular season competing in a single-elimination tournament set to begin Feb. 27, 2018 on campus sites. The semifinals and championship game will be played at John Brown University on March 2-3.
