Stars rally past Mid-America Christian 81-73

OCU overcomes 13-point third-quarter deficit

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled out an 81-73 victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday night at the Gaulke Activity Center.
Daniela Wallen delivered a season-high 32 points for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 13th in NAIA Division I women's basketball, improved to 8-4, 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Catherine Kruschke accounted for 19 points and nine rebounds, and Markeisha Johnson supplied 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals for OCU.
Leah Cheney led the Stars in assists (nine) and steals (six). Wallen, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, added nine rebounds, five assists and five steals for OCU.
OCU piled up 34 points off 26 Mid-America Christian turnovers. In the first half, the Stars took advantage of 13 Mid-America turnovers to tally 15 points. OCU limited its turnovers to 13 for the game.
"Especially the last three quarters, I thought we did our jobs," OCU coach Bo Overton said. "Daniela was really good. We got off to a slow start, and a lot of that is they have a really good team that can really shoot it. When you come out and give up seven 3s in the first seven to eight minutes, it's tough. Our guys kept doing the plan and stuck to it. This was a good win, especially on the road here."
Oklahoma City erased Mid-America Christian's 52-39 third-quarter advantage by reeling off 16 unanswered points. Wallen sparked the Stars with 10 points during that run, hitting free throws with 3:12 left for a 53-52 edge.
Mid-America recovered to take a 61-60 lead early in the fourth period, then tie the game 66-66. Cheney stole the ball, then set up Wallen on a layup to put OCU back up 68-66 with 5:03 remaining.
Mid-America Christian built 12-2 and 17-5 early advantages thanks to its 3-point shooting. Mid-America went 10-for-20 from 3-point range during the first half, but shot 5-for-16 on 3-pointers in the second period.
Oklahoma City stormed back with a 10-2 splurge to tie the game 27-27 with 6:13 left in the second quarter. Cheney scored the tying bucket off Wallen's feed. Johnson created the transition opportunity with a steal and crosscourt outlet pass.
OCU takes on Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
