Matt Aguero
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University has added Matt Aguero as an assistant cross country and track and field coach.
Aguero has nine years of experience as a head coach, including the past two as St. Gregory's cross country and track and field coach.
Prior to St. Gregory's, Aguero had been cross country coach at Cameron from 2005-12. Aguero has coached 10 national champions, 26 all-Americans, 59 national meet qualifiers and 78 all-conference performers in his coaching career, which started in 2004-05 as an assistant at Virginia Intermont. Aguero helped Virginia Intermont to the 2004 NAIA men's cross country championship.
Aguero is a USA Track and Field level I and II certified coach.
"I am very excited to have Matt join us here at OCU," OCU coach Conor Holt said. "We value not only his coaching qualifications but also his personal experiences as an elite marathoner. Matt will be a great role model for our student-athletes."
During his college career, Aguero became an NAIA all-American while competing for Minot State (N.D.), setting the school record in the marathon. Aguero also set the East Central marathon record while becoming an all-region cross country runner and three-time national track and field meet qualifier.
Aguero has run two ultra marathons and more than 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon these past two years. He won the 2005 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. Originally from Poteau, Okla., Aguero entered the Poteau High School athletics hall of fame after setting the 1,600-meter and 5,000-meter school records.
Oklahoma City had a breakout season in 2013-14. In men's cross country, the Stars won their first national championship as well as the Sooner Athletic Conference championship. Four OCU runners became all-Americans as the team went unbeaten. OCU's women finished as SAC runner-up and 16th in the NAIA Championships.
During the indoor track and field season, OCU garnered nine all-American nods while setting school records in the 600 meters, 800 meters, kilometer, mile, 3K, 5K and DMR. OCU's men finished seventh in the NAIA Indoor Championships.
In the spring, OCU had eight all-Americans, including national champions Arya Bahreini in the marathon and Csaba Matko in the 10,000 meters. OCU's men finished fourth in the NAIA Championships. The Stars posted record times in the 800, 1,500, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 4x800-meter relay, 5K, 10K and marathon. Bahreini won the half marathon at the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, while his teammate Reno Blum took second.
