CEDAR HILL, Texas – Oklahoma City University pounded Northwood (Texas) 90-66 on Saturday in the Nutting Hill Arena Building at Trinity Christian High School.
Kayla MacKenzie, a senior from Peoria, Ariz., racked up 17 points to top a season-high six Stars scoring in double figures. OCU, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, moved to 14-2, 11-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU reached 90 points for the fifth time this season. The Stars averages 83.6 points per game and entered the game ranked seventh in scoring offense. OCU won its fifth in a row.
MacKenzie nailed four 3-pointers as OCU shot 9-for-18 from 3-point range.
"As a team I thought we shot the basketball very well," OCU coach Latricia Trammell said. "We had great team chemistry and shared the basketball. The first half we played impressive defense. The second half our intensity and sense of urgency on defense was lacking. This is an area we need to change if we are going to reach several of our team goals this season."
Yvonte Neal, a junior from Spring Valley, Calif., supplied OCU with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Stars' Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a junior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, produced 13 points and two steals, while Autumn Huffman, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Autumn Lau, a senior from Mount Wolf, Pa., added 12 points and five rebounds, and Cara Pugh, a senior from Oklahoma City, contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Stars.
OCU scored 50 points by 23 seconds left in the first half. Neal had consecutive jumpers to cap a 9-0 run and put the Stars up 50-24.
The Stars' lead stretched to a game high of 27 points four times. The last time came with 1:25 to go as Pugh's free throws made for an 85-58 cushion for OCU.
OCU hosts St. Gregory's at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
