Stars build 14-shot lead in NAIA Championships

Three Stars finished round No. 2 in the top-10

Michael Palmer finished the second round at one under par.
SALEM, Ore. – Oklahoma City University carded a round-two 288 and stretched its lead to 14-shots Wednesday in the NAIA Championships at Creekside Golf Club.
The Stars, ranked No. 2 in NAIA men's golf, shot 280-288–568 in the first two rounds on the par-72, 6,887-yard course and built a 14-stroke advantage over Grand View (Iowa) and a 19-shot lead over No. 10 Bellevue (Neb.) and third-ranked Cal State San Marcos.
OCU's Sondre Ronold, of Stavanger, Norway, rolled in five birdies and fired a round-two 69 to take the individual lead. The senior improved his total score to 69-69–138, six under par, and led Adam Loran of Cal State San Marcos by one shot and teammate Anthony Marchesani by two after the second round of play.
Marchesani, a freshman from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, carded a round-two 72 to move into third place. Marchesani doubled his birdie total to 10 and moved to four under on the tournament.
“It was an up and down round,” OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. “We were playing very well and suddenly hit the brakes with about six holes left and I was disappointed in the way we finished the round. I would have liked to have seen a bit more killer instinct to hold it together better. We need to have a good round tomorrow and not give anything away.”
Senior Michael Palmer, of Johannesburg, South Africa, tied for sixth place after 36 holes with 71-72–143. Palmer made five birdies and finished the round at one under par on the tournament.
Junior James Marchesani, of Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, moved to three over par with 72-75–147 and freshman Oswin Schlenkrich, of Queenstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa, finished the second round with 81-81–162.
Teams saw temperatures in the 40s and 50s with a light wind out of the south during the second of four rounds.
The Stars will return to action in the third round of the NAIA Championships Thursday at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore.
Live scoring for the tournament will be available here. Sunset in Salem, the post-round wrap-up show, will air at 8 p.m. CDT and will be available here.
