OCU sits second in NAIA Championships

No. 1-ranked Stars post round-one 297 to finish tied for second

Elliot Groves carded three round-one birdies in the NAIA Championships Tuesday.
SALEM, Ore. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University carded a round-one 297 and tied for second Tuesday in the NAIA Championships at Creekside Golf Club.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, rolled in 15 birdies on the par-72, 6,887-yard course and tied for second with Sooner Athletic Conference rival Oklahoma Christian, one shot behind tournament leader Victoria (British Columbia).
Senior Taylor Artman, of Norman, Okla., led OCU with a round-one 73. Artman birdied the first, third, 11th and 16th holes to finish in a tie for sixth. Nathan Anderson of Texas Wesleyan shot a 70 to grab the individual lead and Oklahoma Christian's Vilhelm Bogstrand carded 71 to finish one shot off the pace.
Clark Collier, a senior from Edmond, Okla., fired a round-one 74 to tie for 12th. Collier carded four birdies on the day.
Sophomore James Marchesani, of Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, added a 74 of his own to finish tied for 12th. Marchesani carded 11 pars and 3 birdies on the round.
Michael Palmer, a junior from Johannesburg, South Africa, turned in a 76 to finish tied for 38th and senior Elliot Groves, of Winchester, Hampshire, England, shot 78.
The Stars will return to action in the second round of the NAIA Championships Wednesday at 3:40 p.m. CDT at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore.
