OCU snatches 18th SAC men's golf title

Second-ranked Stars build 29-stroke winning margin on No. 1 Oklahoma Christian

The Stars celebrate capturing the Sooner Athletic Conference men's golf championship for the 15th time in 16 years.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University seized the team title for the 15th time in 16 years by a commanding 29 strokes in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's golf championships Tuesday at The Rawls Course.
The Stars, ranked second in the NAIA, posted a 16-under-par 283-280-272–835 to finish ahead of top-ranked defending national champion Oklahoma Christian, who shot 286-295-283–864.
No. 11-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) took third place with a 288-288-291–867, while 19th-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) finished fourth at 286-296-292–874.
Southern Nazarene had a fifth-place 290-292-295–877, and Rogers State carded a 306-291-287–884 to be in sixth. No. 24th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist compiled a 296-288-307–891.
Oklahoma City won its 18th SAC championship and earned the conference's berth into the NAIA Championships on May 22-25 at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore. The Stars own national championships from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010.
“We played solid this week,” OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. “It was great to see them finish strong. Our confidence has been growing and growing, and I think we have a lot of steam heading into nationals.”
OCU's Clark Collier captured the SAC individual championship by firing a 14-under-par 67-69-66–202. Collier, a senior from Edmond, Okla., became a three-time all-conference performer by sinking seven birdies against one bogey Tuesday. He birdied the par-5, 531-yard ninth hole all three times during the tournament.
All five Stars finished among the top eight as three grabbed all-conference honors with a top-five showing.
Collier finished five strokes ahead of Oklahoma Christian's Alasdair Dalgliesh, who shot 72-70-65–207. James Marchesani of Oklahoma City collected his second all-SAC nod with a third-place 73-70-68–211. Marchesani knocked in five birdies Tuesday.
Bradley Phelps of Rogers State recorded a fourth-place 73-69-70–212, and Taylor Artman of OCU took all-SAC with a 76-71-66–213. Artman, a senior from Norman, Okla., birdied the first five holes Tuesday on the way to a seven-birdie day.
The Stars' Elliot Groves and Michael Palmer tied for sixth. Groves put together a 72-70-72–214, while Palmer turned in a 71-71-72–214.
The temperature on the par-72, 7,323-yard course reached 96 degrees with a 10-mph wind.
OCU now boasts of 20 conference men's golf championships. OCU won two titles in the Midwestern City Conference, currently known as the Horizon League.
