OCU prevails in playoff in Jones Invitational

Marchesani lifts second-ranked Stars with birdie in playoff

OCU upended a field of 10 NCAA Division I teams Tuesday.
CALHOUN, La. – Oklahoma City University captured the Louisiana-Monroe Wallace Jones Invitational title, defeating host Louisiana-Monroe in a playoff Tuesday at Calvert Crossing Golf Club.
The Stars, ranked second in NAIA men's golf, won the inaugural ULM event by two shots while copping their second playoff victory this season. OCU shot 292-296-299–887 to best 10 NCAA Division I teams.
In the playoff, OCU compiled a 1-under-par on the 18th hole as James Marchesani nailed a birdie, while the rest of the squad made par. Mason Seaborn birdied the 18th for Louisiana-Monroe, while three of his teammates bogeyed the hole.
OCU ended the regular season with two wins, three runner-up finishes and nine top-five team scores in 10 starts.
"Our confidence is increasing, and we are excited about the rest of the season," OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. "The playoff was very exciting. The day was a roller coaster, and we fought hard all the way to come out on top."
The Stars' Clark Collier took runner-up honors in the tournament, carding a 70-73-77–220 on the par-72, 6,822-yard course. Collier, a senior from Edmond, Okla., ended up three strokes off the pace set by Garrett Driver of Sam Houston State. Collier sank a birdie on the 17th hole.
Marchesani of OCU tied for third place after registering a 75-74-72–221. Marchesani, a sophomore from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, knocked in birdies on the fourth, sixth and 10th holes Tuesday. Taylor Artman posted a 72-76-75–223 to tie for eighth for the Stars.
Elliot Groves knotted for 13th after turning in a 75-73-78–226 for OCU. Groves buried four birdies on the day. Sondre Ronold contributed an 80-79-75–234 while recording four birdies.
Playing as an individual, Cameron Meyers had a 73-82-77–232.
Winds were calm as temperatures reached 82 degrees Tuesday in Calhoun, La.
The Stars compete next in the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships on April 23-24 at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
