FORT WORTH, Texas – Third-ranked Oklahoma City University took down No. 1 Oklahoma Christian in a playoff to win the Texas Intercollegiate Tuesday at Hawks Creek Golf Club.
The Stars, ranked third in the NAIA, shot 286-281567 on the par-72, 6,847-yard course to grab a share of first place with Oklahoma Christian.
In the playoff, junior Michael Palmer birdied, sophomore James Marchesani sank a 20-foot putt for eagle and senior Taylor Artman made a 10-foot par putt to give OCU the victory by one stroke.
“Anytime you win it's a good feeling, but it's very exciting to do so in extra holes,” OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. “To be a champion you must persevere and we did that today. It was a good team effort and I'm proud of them.”
Palmer, of Johannesburg, South Africa, shot 70-70140 and tied for third place overall. The junior carded nine birdies to finish two shots behind winner Johan Andersson of Southern Nazarene.
Marchesani, of Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, shot 68 in the final round to finish tied for eighth with 73-68141.
Senior Clark Collier fired 72-72144, Artman carded 71-74145 and junior Sondre Ronold shot 78-71149.
Senior Cameron Meyers shot 71-75146 while playing unattached.
“We still have miles to go with course management and mental mistakes, but I feel we are progressing,” Blaser said. “We will continue to work hard at getting better and build on our confidence.”
OCU will return to action in the Spring Break Invitational on March 26-27 at Battle at the Primm in Primm Valley, Nev.
