Stars sail past Wayland Baptist 89-48

OCU moves to 22-1 on the seaon behind 19-point outburst from Booze

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University cruised past Wayland Baptist (Texas) 89-48 Thursday at the Hutcherson Center.
OCU got 19 points from senior point guard Taylor Booze and improve to 22-1 overall and 16-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
The Stars came out shooting and opened the game on a 17-2 run. Senior Dietra Caldwell buried a 3-point basket and junior Lauren Gober added two of her own to give OCU a 17-2 lead with 14:58 remaining in the half.
Wayland Baptist responded and cut the Stars' lead to six at the 8:45 mark. Desiree Jeffries and Philicia Kelly combined for eight unanswered points and sparked OCU on a 21-6 run to end the half. Booze hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap the run and give the Stars a 42-19 lead at halftime.
The Stars hit on 5-of-9 3-point attempts and forced 14 Wayland Baptist turnovers in the first half. Jeffries led all scorers with eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
Booze picked up where she left off and scored OCU's first six points of the second half to push the Stars' lead to 49-22 with 16:49 remaining in the contest.
OCU maintained its double-digit advantage and led by as many as 41 in the half en route to taking the 89-48 victory.
The Stars shot 50 percent from the field and from 3-point range on the evening and outscored Wayland Baptist 42-20 in the paint.
Booze added five assists and five rebounds to her game-high 19 points. Kelly posted 14 points, Gober tallied 13 points on 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line and Jeffries finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The OCU defense forced 26 turnovers while holding the Flying Queens to 30 percent from the floor and 3-point distance on the game.
OCU will stay in Texas to take on Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
