Defending NAIA champion OCU aims for bid into nationals

NAIA West Qualifying Group Championships, USA STUNT Tournament happen Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena

The Stars vie for a bid into the NCA/NDA NAIA College Nationals on April 11-15 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University spirit squads will host the NAIA West Qualifying Group Cheerleading/Dance Championships and USA STUNT Tournament on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Doors open at 9 a.m. and tickets are $5 each with free admission for children 5 and under.
OCU will compete with Ottawa (Kan.), Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist (Texas) in all-girl, small and large coed cheer and dance and mascot categories. The teams will be competing for bids into the NCA/NDA NAIA College Nationals on April 11-15 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
OCU won NAIA national championships in cheerleading and dance in 2011.
“I think we're going to do well,” OCU coach Brandy Corcoran said. “We lost some good talent, but the bulk of our returners are all still here on both teams.”
Later in the day, OCU will switch gears and compete against Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the USA STUNT Tournament.
“STUNT is completely different and it's taken a lot to retrain our brains,” Corcoran said. “It is set up for the spectators to be more of a game than a performance opportunity.”
STUNT, originally part of traditional cheerleading, could emerge as a separate NAIA sport in the future. To read more about NAIA STUNT, click here.
