OCU pulverizes Oklahoma Christian 103-44

Stars saddle Oklahoma Christian with its most lopsided loss ever

Desiree Jeffries produced 10 points, four rebounds and two assists while shooting 4-for-5 from the floor Thursday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University ripped Oklahoma Christian 103-44 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Lauren Gober, a junior from Newcastle, Okla., spearheaded OCU with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I women's basketball, upped their record to 18-1, 12-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU dealt its Backyard Brawl rival Oklahoma Christian its worst women's basketball defeat ever. The Stars surpassed a 96-41 Oklahoma Baptist rout of Oklahoma Christian on Jan. 5, 2008. The Stars scored 100 points for the 14th time in Rob Edmisson's seven-year stint as OCU coach and fifth time this season.
Seven Stars reached double-digit scoring. Kayla MacKenzie, a sophomore from Peoria, Ariz., posted 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Philicia Kelly, a senior from Nassau, Bahamas, added 13 points and eight rebounds for OCU.
OCU's Dietra Caldwell chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Tiffany Goldwire contributed 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. Desiree Jeffries and Cara Pugh each scored 10 points as Pugh registered her first career double-double with 10 rebounds as well.
The Stars committed seven turnovers, two in the first.
“We put up 62 points in the first half,” Edmisson said. “It says a lot about our efficiency.”
Oklahoma Christian led 7-2 early, but OCU answered with a 22-1 run. Jeffries' 3-point play gave OCU an 9-7 lead, an advantage the Stars kept the rest of the game.
MacKenzie knocked in three treys during that stretch. Jeffries had seven of her points during the Stars' onslaught. Her transition bucket put OCU up 24-8 with 12:23 left in the game.
OCU's bench players tallied 52 points.
“Early on it was a one-possession game, then next I looked up, we were ahead double digits,” Edmisson said. “Our second rotation of kids gave a great performance. Over the past three games, our bench has averaged 47 points a game.”
OCU shot 51.9 percent from the field and 58.1 percent in the first half. Oklahoma Christian managed 28.6 percent shooting.
The Stars meet Northwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. Saturday in Alva, Okla.
