Kansas State prevails 63-51 over OCU

Stars drop exhibition to Big 12 member

Desiree Jeffries scored 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field Thursday.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Oklahoma City University challenged Kansas State before falling 63-51 in a women's basketball exhibition Thursday at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Stars, ranked third in NAIA Division I, trailed by five points early in the second half before succumbing to a late Kansas State surge.
Desiree Jeffries, a junior from Oklahoma City, served as OCU's ringleader with 17 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Dietra Caldwell, a senior from Missouri City, Texas, became the Stars' only other double-figure scorer with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.
OCU shot 33.3 percent from the field, while Kansas State fared no better, hitting 33.3 percent from the floor. K-State had edges in rebounding (46-41) and scoring off the bench (19-6).
“I thought we showed a lot of toughness,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “We played great defense and really battled on the boards. We make some layups and free throws, and it's a tight game to the end. All in all, I'm really proud of our kids.”
Brittany Chambers led the Wildcats with 19 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Jalana Childs added 13 points, and Haley Texada chipped in eights to top the K-State subs.
“I really appreciate the opportunity to have a game against an opponent with this kind of athleticism and aggressiveness,” Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. “They are just so well coached, and it is great to have Coach (Rob) Edmisson and Claire Coggins on that other sideline. We knew we were going to line up against a team that would challenge us, and it was definitely a great opener for us.”
Kansas State built 14-2 and 18-4 advantages early. Tiffany Goldwire sank the Stars' first basket by hitting a layup at 11:01 left in the first half. OCU climbed back into the contest as Philicia Kelly's lay-in cut its deficit to 18-15 at the 5:19 mark.
Goldwire dropped in a layup to slice the K-State lead to 32-27 with 17:22 remaining in the game. Jeffries canned a 3-pointer to cut into the Kansas State advantage at 36-30.
The Wildcats responded by scoring the game's next 10 points. Chambers scored nine of Kansas State's points during that spree. She put Kansas State ahead 46-30 on a 3-point play with 13:16 to go.
The Stars take on Texas A&M at 2 p.m. Sunday in College Station, Texas.
