OKLAHOMA CITY – Jacob Fox has organized an American Red Cross blood drive to be held on the campus of Oklahoma City University on Thursday. The blood drive will be held at the Freede Center lobby at 2501 N. Blackwelder Ave., from 1-5 p.m.
Fox, a sophomore from Egg Harbor, N.J., is the coxswain on the OCU men's rowing team and a participant of the 2010-11 Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program. He was selected as one of 13 student-athletes from around the nation that are helping promote the Red Cross strategy of moving from awareness to action.
Fox's first call to action on the OCU campus is organizing the fall blood drive, the first of two this academic year. He is encouraging all those on campus and in the surrounding metropolitan area to consider giving the gift of life through a blood donation to the Red Cross.
“There's only about two percent of Americans that can give blood who actually do give blood,” Fox said. “Just to think, we actually have so much to give and not many people actually do give blood.”
He has set a goal of collecting 75 donations during the blood drive. Though there are currently appointments for less than a third of his goal, he is undeterred in his efforts to obtain as many donations as possible and still strive towards his goal.
“With one blood donation you can save up to three lives,” Fox stresses to those considering donating. “If you had the chance, the opportunity of saving someone's life, why not do it. Why not take 30 minutes out of your time to save someone else's life.”
Walk-ins are welcome, but to schedule an appointment to donate, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or e-mail Fox at jfox@my.okcu.edu.
