Stars beat Menlo 40-5 in National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Oklahoma City University opened defense of its NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals championship with a 40-5 victory over Menlo (Calif.) on Saturday in the UNI Dome.

The Stars improved to 18-1 in duals. OCU faces Missouri Valley in the tournament semifinals at 11 a.m. Sunday. The championship dual will be 3 p.m.

Firen Gassman picked up the first of three falls OCU had Saturday. Gassman, ranked fourth at 59, pinned Kayla Garza 32 seconds into the second period.

OCU’s Tessa Plana stuck Monique Cabrera 37 seconds into the second period at 63. Plana is ranked third at her weight, while Cabrera is eighth.

Lacey Novinska, ranked third at 72, overcame losing the first period by getting the fall against seventh-rated Moriah Fernandez in 1:17 in the second.
